An age old debate: Conversion or Track?

I received an email from a reader asking for advice on either buying a $600 track bike from his LBS or doing a conversion on an 80's Schwinn. This is def is a tough one now with all the new parts out there. I would compare this debate to the topic of abortion. It's an iffy subject and people can get pretty heated on both sides...

Conversions work if you're either trying to have a go at it on the cheap or are not wanting to invest too much into something you're unsure you'll end up liking. Other than that fact, do yourself a favor and don't bother wasting your time, money, and effort with one. Unless of course you're like myself and already know the ins and outs of bike building. Though despite that fact it's still a bitch putting a conversion together AND have it be reliable. This of course pertains to older 27" road bikes. Newer 700c conversions are def easier and more reliable.. But it's still a conversion...

A stock bike like a Bianchi Pista or Specialized Langster is good if you want something easy with a warranty that can be repaired at little to no cost by your LBS. But you'll also be riding a stock. bike.. Eventually you're going to want to swap some parts out so it doesn't look like you're riding around on a photo from a fucking catalog...

In my opinion the best thing to do is a proper DIY build. Find an old 10 speed at a thrift store or garage sale for like $20-$30 bucks and use it for scrap parts (depending on it's age). Then, go ahead and find yourself a used track frame and fork (drilled) somewhere for cheap. Something like an IRO is perfect. Then gather up your wheels and other essential parts I have listed in the next graph...

The main things you'll need to complete a build is a Frame, Fork, Wheels, Tires, Tubes, Rim Strips, Cranks, Bottom Bracket, Cog, Lockring, and Chain. Other parts such as bars, headset, grips or wrap, front brake caliper, brake lever, seat post, saddle, pedals straps and toe clips can be crap take off parts from old bikes or used gear from friends. They can be replaced later on when more funds become available. Your best bet is to spend the money on the first list of items...

If you're handy and looking to make a DIY project out of this, prepare to spend some money on tools as well. Unless of course you have a buddy who can help or loan you tools. Work share type shops are also great for this. The main tools you'll need are a set of metric Allen keys (mainly 4, 5, & 6), Pedal wrench, Chain whip, lockring tool, chain breaker tool, philips / flat head screwdrivers, and the Bottom Bracket tool that corresponds to the BB you have. Some of the tool kits around on the sites are good but most do not include track bike specific tools unless you get the expensive pro kits. If you've already have a roadie or other bikes lying around then a kit + the other track specific tools would be good...

A word on tolerances: Bike parts don't always fit together perfectly. All it takes for something to go wrong is a fraction of a millimeter. Though with the proper adapter/shim (or cut up coke can ((which I DO NOT reccomend)) ) you can make things work. For instance, you can make a 1 1/8" threadless stem work on a 1" threaded headset with the right adapters. Do your research and check over the forums. Make sure you know what sizes you're working with before you begin. If you look hard enough, most all bike parts have their size stamped on it somewhere...

Here's some links to help you start out with. Also, be sure and check the newbie's sidebar section of this blog:

Frames:

IRO

Again, looking around on the forums and ebay are the best places to get a decent affordable frame...

Wheels:

Cheapies and the next step up would be a set of deep v's laced to some formula hubs. You can easily find these on ebay for around $200 ish...

Tools:

Nashbar or Ben's Cycle

Shimano lockring/chain whip combo tool

With my suggestion on a DIY build, you might end up spending about the same cash money as a new fixer at your local bike shop. BUT you'll come out of the experience with the tools and know how you'll need for maintenance, when ready to start your next project or one for a friend. Not to mention the satisfaction in knowing you built it your fucking self!

Finally, for those of you with any lingering questions, edits, links, concerns or thoughts, please feel free to comment on this post. I have now opened my blog for any and all to post comments on it...

When you're on the verge of killing yourself over a woman...

...the best thing you can do to keep your mind occupied is by getting your hands dirty:

Before:

After:

There.. isn't that better now?

Oh and you know I didn't walk out of there (there being an undisclosed location) empty handed:

sssSKOINKS!!!

My new favorite things taking up space in my apartment:

Campagnolo Delta brakes:

Anyone got a pair of brake shoes and cover for me?? Oh and BTW, if you're as curious as I've always been about how the internals function, check this out...

A Litespeed built, Eddie Merckx Designed Ti frame:

Which would be AWESOME if it was a tad bigger and NOT CRACKED! I'm hoping there's a chance it can be repaired. I'm going to see what Steve B. has to say about it...

Joker C4 frame:

Oddly enough I mentioned a pair of these that recently sold on ebay. Kinda weird that I have one in my possesion now. I'd like to set it up as a TT but I'm not sure yet. The paint job is kinda scratched up and this thing might look kinda hott with a new coat...

Anyways, it was a pretty good haul for the day. And now that the day is over, I'm right back to where I started wanting to kill myself.. UG!

p.s. More pics here...

p.p.s. While I did pay $300 for the Joker and $100 for the Delta's, the rest was FREEEEEEAHAHAHA!!!

Two GNARLY Nago Masters!

Both rare and commanding some HIGH MFin' prices with a few days to go still:

I saw some guy riding the polk-a-dotted one down on the LES the other day. Go figure..

Just.. wow man.. fucking wow...

My jaw is still agape with bewilderment after watching these Polish rappers:

One Jackson to rule them all!

I was recently contacted by the gent I originally sold the Bob Jackson Super Legend frame to. You know, the one I bought years ago which led to the discovery of the collection, or rather, GOLD MINE. For those of you who have no idea as to what I'm talking about- Read this...

You'll notice in this photo that the head tube wasn't cut yet. As the seller states in his auction, the second owner (me) had it cut before selling it...

It's crazy to see that frame back up on ebay again 3 something years after I sold it. Which totally suuuucked since I'd been wanting one SO BAD back then. The guy had another one BTW, only it was too big and he wasn't selling it anyways...

Ahh, memories...

SORRY LATE PLATE!!!

Will it never end??? WILL IT???!!!!!

Let's see.. This auction is probably one of, if not THE most bewildering ones I've seen thus far for a Pista Concept. The main reason is not because it ended at a staggering $1725.. BUT BECAUSE THE ORIGINAL BUY IT NOW WAS $1400!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just when I think the wall bashing lump on my forehead is about to go away.. Some shit like this comes up and just send me into a fit of head against wall bashing rage!

Let's see what our illustrious buyer could've gotten with about the same money shall we?

Okay, so this first suggestion is a bit self serving but I don't really care:

A WAY fucking sexier NEW Bob Jackson super stealthy track frame AND a HED3 wheel:

An Indy Fab built Limited edition Phil Wood COMPLETE track bike:

A SICK near mint totally hooked up Felt TK2 COMPLETE track bike:

And what I personally think they should've gone for:

A Spicer frame fabricated by using their patented swirled JB weld technique:

A set of aerospoks: (but of course ((in a 'do you have any grey poupon?' kind of retort)) )

then top it all of with a Lizard Skin Regal saddle:

All that and there's still a little leftover for one more final touch:

You really wanna to be the Jam? Mount that folksy fucker on your front lawn!

whuuuuuuuuuuuuuT?!!!

I came within a cunts hair of buying this just now but somehow managed to regain my senses at the last second. I would be ALL OVER this Yamaguchi in a heartbeat if it was at least a 55cm...

A big fuck you to the lucky bastard or beotch that this frame fits nicely! Esp for a mere nine hundy- DAMN!!

Well, I've built a tall bike. Now what?...

Eddy Merckx as seen on street...

I was walking over to the L train when I spotted this Merckx locked up. Not the usual set-up I must say...

I then noticed Prolly's surly about 5 paces later. Locked up with the front wheel facing backwards no less.. wanker, hehe. I spotted the man himself up the block and said what's up. Though I don't think he recognized me due to the fact I always look different to people. Probably has something to do with the fact that I rarely show my face in public, let alone find myself walking down fucking Bedford on a Friday night...

Alright, time for you bitches to spend some cash money millions!

...or at least forward this around to some peoples who can:

Just trying to push a few of these Jacksons out the door right now on ebay. Be sure to scope out the auction:

BIDDERS PLEASE NOTE: If you are interested in a frame DO NOT buy it on ebay if you can help it. Fucking final value fees are killin' me over here...

57cm boxed Cream with Dark Moss Green lug lining w/ Aerohead lugs!

56cm Boxed Green with Cream White panels and Blue lining!

52cm ST CTT, 53cmTT Matte Black and Hott Pink- SICK!!!

57cm ST CTT, 56.5cmTT Matte Grey with Red front panel and Blue lining!

Other details include: Paul Adjustable dropouts, dimpled rear seat tube, two tone paint job w/lug lining, made from 631 Reynolds, Aggressive track geometry and Drilled fork for a front brake on the last three ONLY. Top 57cm Aerohead one has both front and rear drilling and cable braze-ons with a slightly more lax geometry...

Prices are no joke on these and you can blame that on our wonderful man in charge. Also, keep in mind that a standard plain jane 'off the peg' frame from BJ shipped costs $860 (435₤). These ones obviously have a lot more going on that a boring single paint job. From what I hear Jackson is kinda back up right now. Ours are ready to go right MFing NOW!

Be sure and let me know if any of all ya'll gotst any questions for me...

Let the blog tagging begin!

Low and behold I arrive at home tonight after a long hard day at work only to find that I have once again been mention on the ever popular Bike Snob NYC blog. At first I was filled with dread recalling my first apperance on his site. Low and behold, he actually said I was one of his favorite blogs and tagged me! I suddenly found myself flushed with glee like when a school girl gets asked out to the homecoming dance by the team quarterback...

After the initial shock and gaiety subsided, it occurred to me this could just be some sneaky ploy of the snob to get me to do/say/write something ridiculous that he could then use to his advantage when next he felt the desire to mock me. Realizing how unbelievably paranoid and ludicrous the dialog was going through my head, I decided to go back to my original plan for the evening: Watching adult swim and rubbing one out to one of the XXX torrent files I'd downloaded the previous night in anticipation desperation for this evening...

A few hours later with the sweat wiped from my brow and yet another generation amongst the many untold civilizations lost to the ages, I got back to completing this stupid questionnaire...

So here we go:

If you could have any one — and only one — bike in the world, what would it be?

I'll have to agree with the snob on this one and go with something more suited towards both off road riding and on. Most likely something in a cross style(ish) bike since I'm just not a fan of Mountain Bikes...

Do you already have that coveted dream bike? If so, is it everything you hoped it would be? If not, are you working toward getting it? If you’re not working toward getting it, why not?

Fortunately I've been BEYOND lucky enough to have not one, not two, but a whole stable of dream bikes. However, to be fair to the question I would have to say my Bilenky is my dream-dream bike. Out of all of them it's the one I spent the most time conjuring it's design and overall aesthetic. Where as the rest were just solid gold finds...

If you had to choose one — and only one — bike route to do every day for the rest of your life, what would it be, and why?

I would have to say that one of my favorite rides is from the Manhattan side GW bridge down to 57th street. It's just a nice stretch of green way that isn't too crowded and offers some pretty great scenery. One of my favorite things about the ride would have to be the area where that dude builds those awesome drift wood sculptures along the banks of the Hudson. They're fucking awesome and keep getting better!

What kind of sick person would force another person to ride one and only one bike ride to to do for the rest of her / his life?

Prob the same type of person that would drive a massive SUV with a yellow ribbon magnet on the bumper and honk at me for being in the way... I would've said my mother but she actually doesn't want me to ride any bikes at all...

Do you ride both road and mountain bikes? If both, which do you prefer and why? If only one or the other, why are you so narrow minded?

Just roadies for me thanks. Besides, my cycling tunnel vision only allows me to focus in on the intricate details of one facet of cycling at a time...

Have you ever ridden a recumbent? If so, why? If not, describe the circumstances under which you would ride a recumbent.

I've never ridden one and most likely never will. The only circumstance I could imagine that would actually get me to ride one is by gunpoint...

Have you ever raced a triathlon? If so, have you also ever tried strangling yourself with dental floss?

Hells fucking no and fuck fucking no...

Suppose you were forced to either give up ice cream or bicycles for the rest of your life. Which would you give up, and why?

This is a really difficult one for me seeing as how I love both ice cream AND bicycles almost equally, hehe.. ug.. God I'm fat.. Okay, I'll stick with bicycles since I haven't really engaged in many other extracurricular activities lately outside of slap boxing the one eyed champ now and again...

What is a question you think this questionnaire should have asked, but has not? Also, answer it.

Okay, I thought of a few for this one:

Q) How many ridable bikes do you currently own?
A) 9

Q) We all love riding, but what are some of the things you hate or bother you about it?
A) Shifting my bits around in the saddle and/or having to let a long fart go while riding a fixie

Q) How many times have you been hit by a car? any injuries?
A) 6 - 0

You’re riding your bike in the wilderness (if you’re a roadie, you’re on a road, but otherwise the surroundings are quite wilderness-like) and you see a bear. The bear sees you. What do you do?

Whenever I think of bears I'm reminded of that scene in Borat where the kids get chased off by the one in the ice cream truck. I would undoubtingly act in a similar manner unless of course I had a wasp knife on me. In which case I would stab that bitch in the heart and freeze that shit!

Now, tag three biking bloggers. List them below.

Prolly is not Probably

Hipster Nascar

The Rotten Club

By the way snobby, I hope you have some extra steel wool leftover to help wash the teeny girl feeling that's crawling all over me after writing this fucking post...
