Something Old and Something New.. That's Old..

One of my favorite Christmas traditions is to head over to my buddy Tom's family home after the festivities (I use that word loosely) are over at my families house. His family's spirit and joviality is not to be missed on such an occasion and I always make it a point to stop by (dressing up like Jesus with flashlights strapped to the back of my head singing happy birthday to myself def would have been a fucking riot BTW xD). Darts were thrown, fruit was juggled, hacky sacks were hacked and many a rancid fart was cut. Afterwords I was reaquainted with a very old and dear friend taking up space in their shed- My old 1980 Team Mongoose from when I was a teenager:

A bit worse for wear now after various crappy rebuilds, loaning it to Tom to ride around and sitting in storage for YEARS now. But here she is back in the day in all her BMXy glory circa 1988:

Granted it was no GT Pro Performer the rest of the rich poseurs in town were riding but it was a noble steed none the less allowing me to pull many a block long wheelie on the way to school..

The frame was originally given to me by a good friend of my brothers at the time. His name was Bill. Bill and my bother were the coolest guys I knew growing up. They used to ride mopeds together before it became the gayest shit you could possibly be caught doing with yourself in the states. Imagine someone riding a huffy beach cruiser in a speedo with rollerblades on. Fortunately they moved on to muscle cars not long after. My bro had a 68' Firebird and then a 88' Grand National Turbo which I never got to drive:

To best describe my brother back then, I quote Lucas from the NYC fixed forum when I first posted that snap in the car appreciation thread:

'Man, just look at that dude. That guy has the flyiest car on the block and I'd bet money he can jump the shit out of a BMX too. That's the kind of legend that introduces you to iron Maiden and gives you your first titty magazine over the single greatest afternoon of your 12 year old life.'

Yup, that was him in a nutshell :-)

Anyways, back to Bill. Along with mopeds and muscle cars, he was also a die hard WWII 'fan' (and more). He had the foresight to invite my brother and I out to his car one night to show us his new AK47. Putting an AK47 into the hands of a 13 year old who plays manhunt for days on end while running around town camouflaged with a black spray painted entertech tech 9 pistol was better than seeing my first titty mag..

***

UPDATE: A couple of days after this post, I was messing around in the shop when my folks came over for a visit. My moms saw the BMX leaning up against the welding table and asked if it was new. I told her- 'Hell no! I've had that thing since I was a teenager'. Fresh from my reminiscing of this post I asked her if she remembered my brother's friend Bill from back in the day, and that he was the one who gave it to me. To which she answered- 'Oh yeah, he's a woman now'. My natural reaction to that was total befuddlement- 'Wait, what?!!' I was almost as shocked to hear that as when I found out Campy actually issued MTB a groups for a spell. I sat there eyes glazed over as she continued- 'Yeah, your brother was mowing our lawn one day when a car pulled up and woman came out to say hello. He almost fainted when he realized who it was'. Hearing that left me feeling kinda :-/ for the rest of the day..

Fucking weird huh?! I really wish I'd gotten this little tid bit of info before posting this entry. No matter, it's a gem that shouldn't be overlooked none the less..

***

Right, bikes. So yeah, they were a couple of rad guys and they were original ones who got me into BMX since that's what they did before the whole moped phase. My bro taught me how to strip and rebuild bikes and fix flats and shit. Eventually I did my own work and built all my BMXs and fixed my friends bikes too. Man those were the days..

As far as any future plans go, I would like to eventually get the frame dipped in a hot chrome bath and then get some old school parts for it to get her back on the road. As you can see it would be a worth while project for bringing back some good old memories alone!

Like I mentioned in the title of the post, that was something old. Here what I meant about something new that's old- A super sweet 1972 Andre Bertin Track bike:

Pretty fucken schweet huh?!

This sweet whip came to me by way of my good buddy Phil while he was in town for Christmas. He originally bought the frame from a guy who lived near a velodrome in Milan for $140 euros complete. He fixed it up a bit and rode it around briefly before we found him a nice curvy KHS aero. He loved it but was sick of the bitchy TA drivetrain and hard to find french replacement parts. It stayed in storage for a number of years at his girlfriends parents place outside of London before he was finally able to bring it back to the states. I'd only seen some snaps of it up until then so I was stoked to finally see it in person. More so when the measurements turned out to be 56.5cm CTC squared! Granted I prefer a 56cm CTC TT but at only .5cm longer something tells me I'll deal. Esp seeing as how my ass has a lovely Philippe Adjustable Stem to make the fit right and match the Phillipe bars on the bike as well. What gets me even more stoked than anything else is the fact that I just so happen to have a set of DURA ACE 10 CRANKS WITH FRENCH PEDAL THREADING- FUCK YESSSSSS!!!!! Here I thought I was going to have to have them rethreaded or get some french pedals in order to get some use out of em. Weird how Shimano, a Japanese brand known for english standards on everything, makes anything with French threading right?! Tho after doing a little research I discovered that AB had the distribution rights to Shimano in France during the 70's and 80's before Shimano bought the rights back in the early 9o's. Apparently during those decades there was a surge in Shimano parts showing up on French bikes with the old standard french sizing. Making it PERIOD CORRECT to toss a set of DA10 French threaded cranks on there BITCHEEEZZZZ!!! In any case, I'm kinda stoked on that since I really don't like TA cranks and I don't really have money to go nuts with builds like I used to. Unless of course I get a good deal on some Stronglights that I should never have sold..

So with that, I'll probably just toss the DA10 cranks, chain and a regular threaded cog on there to keep the Normandy hubs/Mavic rims combo going. But not after spending like 3 days removing all the tubular glue (nice job buddy) and polishing them up from all the dirt etc. Seat and saddle combo to be contemplated as well. An Ideale 39 saddle and a rando 26.2 post should do..

The only other history I've been able to dig up the frame is what I've found on the Bertin website. Being that the frame construction is of Durifort 888 and the # 72 stamped into the top of the Seat lug, I'm thinking it's a 1972 C 56 model. I was unable to locate any other numbers anywhere on the frame or anything else on the web to help me identify the frame more precisely. I'm hoping that something else will turn up when I get around to striping down the frame, cleaning and rebuilding it. If anyone has any other information or details on Andre Bertin please be sure to let me know!

Big huge ups to Phil for finding her and introducing the old girl to my filthy ol' mitts! With any luck she'll be back on the road soon enough and always available whenever you're in town for a spin man :-) ..unless we go snowboarding instead \m/

Right then, lots more bicycle and non bicycle garbage coming soon!!

40&1/2 cage, RC Broham Rack and WTF Townie?!

This one's SURE to get me the hairy eyeball:

aaaaahahaaha, YES! I'm super stoked on how funky and awesome this bike came out!! Specs etc later on since I'd rather talk about the funny shit I made more right now..

Like the RC Broham Rack! (BETA):

For those of you who don't really get the title, please refer to Nintendo's RC Pro Am from 1987 (1:40 to be specific):

The idea came to me during one of my stonier moments a while back and I'd been dying to see it come to fruition. It's the very first rack I've ever made and I basically slapped it together in one afternoon. So yeah, there's lots I could improve on. Like having barely cleaned up the welds! It could def be a bit lighter too. The actual 'speed arrows' could def be either thinner steel or maybe even some other material. Tho they most def make the fucker sturdy and stiff as hell. You could transport a keg on that thing and not have it bend!

While the RC Broham rack is just kinda a fun and reminiscent idea of times when video games weren't consuming everyone's souls, I think this next one is something people would honestly be interested in:

The 40&1/2 cage (BETA):

Yes, I made a cage that can carry any 1/2 gallon container of milk, ice tea and apple cider.. THAT CAN ALSO CARRY A 40oz OF BEER!!

I DARE you to tell me that's not pretty fucking awesome! I mean, how many times have you gone grocery shopping and had to deal with the awkward extra weight on the one side of your bars during the trip home? I never had a rack before this one so that's just how I carried shit and getting milk always sketched me out. No longer tho!

As for the 40oz bottles, I did come up with the idea to make a cage for that first. Not being a drinker however, stalled that idea for a while. Until I realized that if I could make the cage more dual purpose by carrying a 1/2 gallon container as well, it could feasibly make for an actual sellable product..

I basically want to test the cage out myself, make a few tweaks on the next version and see what I think. Perhaps give a couple out for others to test for their feedback. Then if there's interest, I would LOVE to make a bunch more of these! Lord knows I could use some supplementary income these days. I'd just have to make a nice jig first to keep things consistant. The one pictured was all done free hand with a vise..

So yeah, if you're interested, have any thoughts or comments def let me know:

TheTripleC@hotmail.com

Be sure to put 40&1/2 cage in the title of the email or just drop me a comment here..

As for the wacky parts group on the Townie bike itself, read em and weep:

***

Beat up, front end impacted DeBernardi frame resprayed ala rattlecan

Yamaguchi straight blade forks (formerly owned by the man himself, Mike McCarthy)

OG HED wheels with original 7 speed freewheel style hub

Gatorskin Tubulars

Stronglight Ironlight Cranks

Shimano DX pedals

Dura Ace 7 speed rear Derailleur

Vintage Dura Ace Headset

Campagnolo single sided shifter

Campagnolo fluted seat post

Campagnolo Athena Brakes

Selle Turbo Saddle

Dia Compe Brake levers

Cinelli Stem

Nitto Bars

Nashbar Cork Grips

***

Yeah, like I said- NUTTY!

Originally titled: The choose your own adventure townie, this build came about due to a crazy amount of weird and random bike parts I'd accumulated over the years. Some were take off parts from frames I'd bought or found in the trash. Others, like the yamaguchi forks, were just something I snagged off ebay cause, well, they're AWESOME! The forks are great cause the dude I bought them from lived in Manhattan. He told me that he originally bought them off Mike McCarthy back in the day when they used to train together. Apparently, Mike had swapped out the fork I bought for a CF one and then gave it to his buddy. Who then sold it to me. For like $60 bucks. Then my dumbass relinquishes it to a friggen wack ass townie build- douche. So yeah, stoked on that purchase! Not sure if it'll stay on there but it def gives me a kick seeing it in front like that, hehe..

Not to mention those fuuuucking RAD HED wheels! OMG I was SO stoked to put that pair together!! I got the front wheel while buying a Specialized HED3 off some dude a while back for $300 for both in super nice shape. Then, I got the rear from a local cat. I didn't know the hub was a threaded freewheel at first when I went to check it out. But since it was a matching set I felt like they just needed to coexist together. Then I thought, HOLY FUCK I should totally blaze these on my townie! With the help of a couple of tubular Gatorskins, history
was made. A HISTORY EVERY PERIOD CORRECT WANKER WILL GET HIS PANTIES IN A TWIST OVER- MWAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Seriously tho, this shit is hilarious and totally for kicks. I get period correctness and all that but I don't see what's wrong with having a little fun with a bunch of random used parts bin parts either..

Anyways, enough of that shit, repost the 40&1/2 cage so I can feed myself. After all, it's how Ahearne got his start with the Whisky flask cage..

My New Year's Resolution is..

..to BBQ A FUCKLOAD MORE THIS YEAR!!!

Myself cookin' some burgers after a day of galavanting with Tom. Photo by Tom.

Yup, nothin quite like a little taste of summer after a wicked fucking blizzard! DO IT. TO IT..

Here's a quick vid from earlier that day exploring this old hunters fort I found a while back in the weeds:

It was rad finally getting to check it out. When I found it the ground was all frozen and passable. Then during the summer when I first tried to bring Tom and his broham it was all swampy. This time we were finally able to check it out despite having to dredge through the knee to waist high snow drifts..

My other New Years Resolution is to take a fuck load more photos this year. Not just of bikes tho. Like photo-photos. More on that resolution coming this week in a larger bitch rant style post..

In any case, I hope all you fuck nuts enjoyed the holidays!

Some rad old school bike shop storefronts along with a little NSFW!

So good shit Harry from Brooklyn Bike Jumble posted on the NYC fixed board:

..aaand what you're sure to be more interested in (just some various tid bits I randomly spotted on the net):

Yeah, that last one kinda slayed me too 8-)

However if you're looking to be completely and totally ANNIHILATED then check this fucking shit out and keep in mind she has an IDENTICAL TWIN SISTER!!!

Just don't blame me for any coronaries or stokes suffered at the sight of that one. Fuuuck man.. Took me like a week to get back to normal after watching that..

REDONK new Mini Tall ROAD BIKE: CAN YOU SAY SRAM APEX?!!

All I have to say is:

BAAAAAAHHAHAHA!! SRAM AND HED3Z ON A FREAK BIKE- I SO WENT THERE!!!

Yeesh huh?! My sincerest apologies if you weren't sitting down for that shit. Everyone who's seen it thus far kinda has had the same super confused skid mark inducing look of amusement and shock. Which has been AWESOME to witness over and over again!

More snaps on my Flickr page..

Specs:

Frame: Old low end 80's Brigestone and a gas pipe Peugeot
Fork: Extended IRO
Sram Apex 10 Speed Group
HED3 wheels with Gatorskin Tubulars
Thomson Seat post and Stem
Easton EA50 drops
Fizik Saddle and Wrap
Nitto Spare Tubular carrier
Aherne Whisky Flask holder (It's the winter after all)
My very favorite cage pedals from Nashbar xD

Wow I don't even really know where to start with discussing this build.. It really took a fuck load out of me to get it done, pretty much the whole summer. This is the first freak bike frame I've built where a large portion of it is brazed. Having never brazed before, it certainly was a challenge and HUGE learning experience. It's also the first frame I've really spent a whole shitload of time filing, cleaning and finishing up. That def took a really long fucking while. As you can see from the geo there's just about no standard angles going on with this frame. Every single tube was mitered and fit into place. As opposed to the standard freak bike mantra of using a piece of completed frame here and there. The only thing that I didn't modify was the bottom stay off the BB. So yeah, it was a fucking PITA to get everything lined up and angled as right as I could get it. Def had a hard time with the rear stays since my heat control is not quite up to par yet..

There most certainly are a bunch of mistakes here and there which you might pick up from some of the photos. Paint being the biggest. Fucking place I got the custom paint from told me the paint was a newer 'better' version since last time I was there. Which was BS since man, it was just THE WORST. I'm sure this had something to do with being used in a rattlecan instead of a sprayer. Man I really need to get one of those set-ups going one of these days. Powder coating too! Anyways, didn't help that the paint was glossy as well. I fucking HATE working with gloss! It just never turns out that good no matter how careful you are. Matte really is the way to go..

So yeah, I spent all this time cleaning and finishing the frame up all smooth and even only to have the paint come out like fucking crap. Making matters worse is that I had to add the front derailleur bridge to the frame AFTER I painted it. I was afraid I'd need to place it somewhere else but I wasn't sure til I had it built. I would've done a prebuild but once again I found myself out of time wanting to make it down to the Philly Bike Expo a couple months back. Fucking worst part is that the rattlecan ran empty and all I had was a little jar of extra paint the guy had mixed up. I shook my head in frustration, said FUCK IT and just brushed it on. So yeah, it looks like fucking garbage but whatever. I'm over it. I can always respray it if I want..

Having said all that BS, the thing is nothing short of a FUCKING BLAST to ride! Super fast, stiff and responsive. Totally gives a nice stable ride. At a hair over 28 lbs it could be lighter. Tho that's the pedals, acc and Sram Apex adding the extra grams. I could easily save like half a pound if I swapped out the rear cassette alone! Fucking thing is MASSIVE. I went with Apex because A) I really wanted to give Sram 10 a try and B) I dug the idea of having a lighter compact double group that has a triple range of gears, instead of an actual triple. So yeah, I'll gladly take versatility over weight savings. I really have to say tho, I'm fucken digging on it big time! I went for a nice 20 mile ride around my area, hit some killer hills and was able to climb everything no problem. Fucken stoked!

One of my favorite, and super fucking dorky, moments came when I was leaving The Cosmic Wheel in Ridgefield Park NJ during a ride. I hopped on my valiant steed and made my way to the intersection. The light was about to change so I gunned it shifting as I went. I LOVE the sound of shifting hard on HED3s. It makes this loud hollow sounding DUNK, DUNK, DUNK sound. As this is all happening and I'm approaching/flying through the intersection, I notice this guy pull up in the opposite direction on what looked like a department store bought hybrid MTB thing. He stopped for the light and had this big grin on his face like he just bought it and was super stoked on his first ride. Then he hears my drive train shifting and looks up at me as I'm screaming by. The look on his face went from child like jubilance to utterly shattered in a heartbeat. It was kinda like watching those reaction videos of people watching two girls, one cup- SO HILARIOUS! I kinda felt bad but I totally lulzed my ass off anyways, hehe..

All in all this was a MAJOR fucking learning experience. I made a lot of mistakes but what it comes down to is that for someone who has zero formal training with this sort of thing, it's def not a bad effort and I'm not going to let myself get down on it's various pitfalls. Especially considering the fact that, and I'm TOTALLY patting myself on the back about this, is that the design of this thing is really WAY the fuck out there! I mean, I've never seen anything remotely like it. Which is something I'm super, super fucking stoked on since it's what I'm most interested in exploring when it comes to frame building. I'm really looking forward to building more of these frames in the future. I already have the next one in mind! Hopefully one day someone out there will grow some balls and have me make them one, hehe- pussies!

Yet another HUGEMONGOUS THANKS TO BENZ AGAINZ! More mini tall builds to come so WATCH THE FUCK OUT!!

Now had I thought of..

..it would've read something along the lines of:

FUCK YOU, YOU STUPID DOG SHIT EATING FAT MOTHER FUCKING FUCKTARD ASS LICKING SCUMBAG SUCKING FUCKER FUCK YOU!!!!!

You've just been severely cursed out cause your fat fucking ignorant ass was too fucking oblivious to conceive the notion of any other mode of transportation OR THE SAFETY OF ANOTHER HUMAN BEING because your dick is too small or you have to cover the bags under your eyes with enough concealer to plug a storm drain and have to compensate by driving some big shitty car. I understand you can't think of anything but yourself but could you please watch the fuck out next time? You almost fucking killed me asshole!

Granted I'm being somewhat facetious with my version but it def doesn't scream I'm a liberal PC twat and you could roll over me with a No. 2 Pencil as much as mine would. Not to mention the fact that if I was to actually prepare myself for near misses with cars, I think I'd rather hold down some ninja throwing stars if anything. I mean, come on- a magnet?! As tho the driver would find it, peel it off and sit there contemplating the full meaning of what their actions or rather in-actions could've caused... Please!

For instance: This one day a while back I was running some errands etc in town with my car. I know, shame on me for owning one right? Cunts. Anyways, I had my bike in back as I usually do so after I was done I decided to go for a ride. I'm sitting there on the side walk putting my bag and helmet on when this unconscionably fat guy slowly waddles by. I mean this guy was so fat he was wearing enough material you could stich yourself an etire bed set- for reals! I noticed him looking at me as he slowly waddled by with some woman (he's undoubtedly related to). After he passes I hear him say to her under his breath: 'If someone was leaning their bike against my car I'd kick his fucking ass' Now, if you can imagine a pressure gauge for a steam pipe going from zero to steam gushing red and bursting, then you have an idea of how fucking angry I got when I heard that. The worst part is that I couldn't really say anything back since A) I barely heard him and he didn't say it directly to me and B) I didn't want to waste time searching for another spot. Cause wow, I would've LOVED to have given that fat ignorant fuck face a what for. Nothing pleases me more than saying super offensive shit to people like that cause I know they don't have the brain power to come back with anything smart..

In any case, my point is that the fucking guy had the nerve to make a comment about me LEANING my bike against SOMEONE ELSE'S car. I don't even want to know what he'd say if he cut right in front of me at an intersection causing me to run into him. Suffice it to say, it certainly wouldn't be anything smart..

I guess what I'm trying to say with all this is that while taking the high road and diplomacy is super great and I'm all for it, high minded efforts are unfortunately wasted on the average dumb fuck out there. It really sucks, you may not want to believe it, but it's a fact of life so get over it. Most of the time you can avoid confrontation but there's going to be that one time when you just can't and taking the high road or walking away isn't an option (like when your wheel is taco'ed). So be ready, be smart and say something offensive cause honestly, disrespectful people like that don't know how to respond to anything else nor do they deserve your reverence..

The funny thing about being unemployed..

..is that you find yourself doing a lot of things you ordinarily wouldn't be doing. Like plumbing for instance:

For some reason three out of four kitchen faucets in my building needed attention this past week or so. Fucking bizarre. Tho at least I'm getting my money's worth out of that Hozan Lockring tool! Seriously, I've used that fucker more on non cycling occasions that what it was originally intended for. Such a great tool to have at your disposal!

The weather has also been getting pretty fucking shitty here in the Jerz/NYC area. I've got TONS to photograph for all y'allz but it's either rainy, too windy, I'm busy with faucets or the light is just plain shit. Whatever I have managed to photograph, I can't retouch and post until I get myself a bright new retouching screen. And with xmas around the corner, I'm not so sure when that's going to happen. I'll totally get some stuff up soon tho. I'm just gonna go to my buddy's place and use his..

In the meantime, sorry for the lack of posts. I HAVE SO MANY MOTHER FUCKING IDEAS AND THINGS TO POST IT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY. This strange new phase of my life being unemployed for the first time since I was 14 (yes, 14!!) has been interesting to say the least. Refreshing like you wouldn't believe, but it's def fucking weird! I've been unemployed for something like two months now and only recently has the concept of it NOT being a Saturday or Sunday set in. For the longest time, I was going by weekend rules and it was fucking with my program like you don't even know..

Being unemployed has also hampered my 'online life' dare I say. It's a lot harder for me to keep in touch with friends and various blogs etc when I'm not being forced to sit at a desk all day at a job that requires 3 hours of work per 8 hour day. I find it really easy to keep myself busy with various projects around the house and in my shop rather than just lay in bed with my laptop. Which is also nice now and again but I just feel guilty if I'm not being productive these days. Keeping some sort of schedule with yourself is super important if you're not working. It's not easy at first, but I think I'm getting there now..

So what should you derive from all this? Everything and nothing. It is what it is. For all intensive purposes, I think it'll be fucking great for a while. Take a break. Chill. Collect mah mutha fucken unemployment! Work on all the various personal projects I've never been able to focus on. Along with a few others I've come up with :-)

The two most recent being what I'm calling the 'RC Bro-ham rack' and the '40 1/2 cage'. Both coming very shortly so check back again soon suckaz!

This is kiiiiind of amazing!

ZOMG it's so bad that it's fucking AWESOME! Like, REALLY awesome!! Mostly because minus the purple anno it's kinda period correct..

Then there's also this:

Seeing that set up and knowing that I own one of those little bastards makes me want to do something similar to mine. Tho I think it would be radder to weld on a derailleur hangar and widen the stay to accommodate a cassette almost as large as the wheel. Maybe some STI's too, hehe..

I spotted this Vitus freaking BMX frame a while back and man, so rad! Check out the seat stay and BB lugz!!

Wouldn't catch me hitting anything big on it tho..

Anyways, if someone happens to have a really nice retouching screen they can sell, trade for bike parts or give me access to their office long enough to steal one myself, that would be fucking great! The screen on my 3 year old Macbook just ain't cutting it and I have A LOT of photo work to be gettin' done..
